As well as being a charming green space, the garden of the Hotel Sanpi Milano holds a fascinating and unexpected historical secret. The low-rise, beautifully restored building that blends harmoniously amongst our flowering plants is, in fact, an authentic railway signal box dating from 1864.In the 19th century, Milan’s first and historic Central Station stood on what is now Piazza della Repubblica, and its tracks ran at ground level right along the perimeter of Via Lazzaro Palazzi. The building you can now admire in our courtyard was a ‘track sentinel’: a strategic checkpoint where railway staff monitored the steam trains entering and leaving the city. Today, that fragment of nineteenth-century Milan has become the beating heart of our event spaces and relaxation areas. We have skilfully preserved every stone and its period industrial charm to offer you an atmosphere frozen in time. Next time you stroll through our Urban Garden, pause for a moment in the shade of our jasmine arch and run your hand over the stone of the signal box: you’re touching the living history of Milan with your own hands.
